Online Advertisements take many different forms.  The main goal of an advertiser is to have the viewer grab their mouse and click. Here are a few common ways online advertisements are promoted.
One common way to advertise is through interstitial ads. Interstitial ads are in your face ads that can be still or animated. Interstitial ads cannot be avoided and are most commonly presented four to five seconds before you view the next page. Another way advertisers promote their product is through banners. Banners are quite resourceful; however, they do not receive many click-through rates. Like interstitial ads, banner ads can also be still or animated.
Online Advertisers are only given so many seconds to promote their product. Therefore, there is immense pressure to make the ad stand out. In an effort to make online ads more “clickable”, there is an option to add audio and video. “Several companies have used INTERVU's streaming video technology for Internet advertising. Here are a few examples: Bridgestone has a banner ad that sports a race car driving straight toward the viewer, an FAO Schwarz banner ad features a dancing dinosaur, and a Budweiser banner shows a little video of the now famous talking lizards.” (p 123)

  2. I agree. As far as the information in the post, it is really good information. I know when I visit some sights these popup ads are, or can be quite annoying. Sometimes you can be listening to a video and then all of a sudden a commercial is playing at the same time.

  3. I even notice it on the game words with friends. In between plays there is an interstitial ad that you cant click out of for at least 5 seconds. Its annoying but it has got to be effective in order for advertisers to still be using this method.

  4. Online advertising is a way to make money for people who have websites that get numerous hits in a day. I have seen many different types of online advertising formats (Google Ads is an example). Interstitial ads are really common nowadays. It is also effective simply because the user or the visitor of a website is forced to see the ad until it disappears. Many of the free Apple and Android apps are now using this format to make money through advertising and providing the app for free to the user. This type of advertising, in some cases, pushes the user to actually buy the app in order to disable the ads.

    1. Buy buying an upgraded app, one is helping that business thrive which I am for. The upgrades usually seem to cost about $1.99 which is a small price to pay.

  5. I find interstitial ads to be frustrating because they force you to wait until the ad is gone to look at what you intended to look at. I did not realize how beneficial these ads can be, simply since they put the ad in your face.

  6. Sometimes it seems the ads are worthwhile, but there are times when I don't want to be bothered by the pop up ads. I'm sure there is a way to turn them off as it seems they have a tendancy to pop up right in the middle of something important.

  7. I think these ads are great way of grabbing our attentions. So kudos to the Advertisers, but I wonder does it make us want to get it? I know for me, I get frustrated and just close it or wait until it disappears. I never did not take the time to look at what they are promoting.
