The organization was created in 1996 to develop industry standards, conduct
research, and provide support for online advertisers during legal disputes. The
IAB has created formats for online ads, including the Video Ad Serving template
and the Video Player-Ad interface definition format.
The IAB provides us with guidelines, standards, and best practices of online advertising. They have these for topics such as ad verification, email ads, game ads, and social media. The IAB also provides insight on what should go into a websites Terms and Conditions. The standards they set are necessary to create a virtual advertising world that can function in a way that is both helpful to both consumers as well as advertisers themselves.
I'm glad that an organization is keeping track of advertising that websites and companies use. If this were a free advertising world, then who knows what kinds of ads we may see on the internet and TV. I'm not a big gamer, but I know a lot of kids may be influenced by advertising for games that most parents would find inappropriate. Either way all these ads need to be regulated.
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree that someone should be in charge of regulating online advertising. Not only would it be a matter of what kinds of ads we are being exposed to but how many. On a daily basis we are constantly overloaded with advertising, one of many internet users least favorite types-pop ups. I think it is also very important to address privacy when discussing the topic of online advertising. I know many sites track your searches, commonly visited sites and other online actions to tailor advertising to you. To some people it may be seen as a privacy issue, I would be interested to know in what ways these companies are able and not able to track your internet use for the means of advertising.

It's actually surprising to think that there's an organization that is attempting to regulate something as massive as online advertising.
